Countdown to Christmas~

You know how you see something you really like, but for whatever reason you decide that instead of buying it you can make it yourself.

Yes, that is what happened to me when I saw the Silhouette Advent Calendar kit.

At first I thought I’m definitely buying the kit, but then I got to thinking that I sure wish it came in black.

And then I remembered all the Cricut images I already own.

So, off to Hobby Lobby I went.

Which happens to be a place that has frames half off all the time.

I wanted my frame to be large, so I bought a 16 x 20 frame, several spools of wire and an assortment of Tim Holtz Idea-ology clips.

My frame~

I started by taking the glass and backing off of the frame.

And yes, I broke the glass! Yikes!

With a little help I measured the area to equally divide the space.

While trying to determine the spacing my wire would not lay flat, so I grabbed some bamboo skewers from the kitchen to help me plan.

And guess what?

I liked that they were straight, rigid and seemed to be the perfect size, so I ditched the wire idea and painted them black.

Gluing the rods~

I used hot glue to attach the skewers to the frame.

Easy Peasy!

And now comes the fun part.

My advent calendar~

When I looked through my Christmas supplies I instantly knew the October Afternoon Holiday Style Miscellany pack was meant for this project.

All the cards and tags have an eclectic feel, but they still kept my project uniform. Love that!

I added a few Cricut cuts, some Thickers and other October Afternoon embellishments.

I’m actually tickled at how well this turned out.

Not too bad for a DIY.

I used~
October Afternoon Holiday Style Miscellany, Word Stickers and Chip-n-Stick, Very Merry Word Stickers, Good Cheer Paper, Flower Sack, 9-5 Buttons, Rub Ons
Papertrey Ink Twine, Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher, Idea-ology Hinge Clips, Hampton Arts Holiday Dreams & Wishes Stamps
Thickers: Sparkling, Lax, Reindeer, Jewelry Box, Elf, Lullaby, Sprinkles, Bliss
Cricut Essentials for Stars cut at various sizes starting at 2.5″
Cricut Craft Room Basics for the Scalloped Circles cut at 2.75″
Sesame Street Seasons for the Snowflakes cut at various sizes starting at 2″

  1. I think your helper deserves most of the credit ; ) !!!! I’ve been looking at a similar DIY project but don’t know if I’ll actually follow through on it or not. Yours turned out GREAT & you should be very proud of yourself. And your helper!! Thank goodness it was you & not her that broke the glass : O !

  2. Love it! I knew you could do it! And you did it exceptionally well. Loved your measuring assistant too! The dates and added embellishments fit perfectly with the October Afternoon products. You have totally motivated me!

  3. Great job. Love the resourcefullness using the bamboo… Not a huge fan of OA line but I will say this may just change that. I love the paper and cut little cards. GREAT JOB.
